The new year of one-time vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin started on a rather controversial note. She posted a photo of her 6 year old son Trig standing on the family dog Jill. The Facebook post was intended to wish everyone a happy new year, but instead got intense criticism from many people who identified the act as animal abuse. If a person takes a look into the mind of children with Down’s Syndrome, not just this child, but most children with Down’s Syndrome or other mental health problems, they may not be able to reason for themselves so they depend on adults around them to reason for them. If they are not told “you need to stop stepping or standing on dogs it will harm them ” and/or “the dog may bite you”. As they get older they will not understand why they can’t do this anymore, they may do it even as an adult. So as their care takers we have to reason for them. I don’t think most adults would stand on a dog or allow any child to stand on a dog with or without Down’s Syndrome or other mental health problems. And as for the dog it’s not good at reasoning.

All these people that are so concerned with this dogs welfare seem to be forgetting that its a living, breathing creature capable of feeling pain and reacting to it. The kid would be on the ground in a flash if the dog was being hurt.
