The new year of one-time vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin started on a rather controversial note. She posted a photo of her 6 year old son Trig standing on the family dog Jill. The Facebook post was intended to wish everyone a happy new year, but instead got intense criticism from many people who identified the act as animal abuse. I don’t care who the dog belongs to, the fact is this is not acceptable for the safety of the dog or the safety of the child. The child shouldn’t have to depend on the forgiveness of the dog, that’s why he has parents to teach him right from wrong. Likewise, the dog should not have to lie there and take what common sense tells us is painful footsteps on its body. that’s why it has an owner who should make sure others treat it right.
I often comment on photos where I see dangerous situations taking place between children and animals and this is NO different just because the child’s mother is a public figure.
Also, a simple “Sorry, I wasn’t thinking …” would have sufficed instead of attempting deflection techniques of a 3 year old.
I don’t think it’s “okay”, but also don’t think it really hurt the dog. Surely he realizes he can’t stand on every dog.
