The new year of one-time vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin started on a rather controversial note. She posted a photo of her 6 year old son Trig standing on the family dog Jill. The Facebook post was intended to wish everyone a happy new year, but instead got intense criticism from many people who identified the act as animal abuse. To everyone using anecdotes of their children riding their dogs as an excuse for standing on one, riding is very different, mechanically, on the animal’s body than standing. Standing puts more force on a smaller contact point (the feet), as opposed to riding, where the pressure is reduced by expanding the contact point surface area (the rider’s seat and legs). In addition, the height makes a difference; a more compact force close to the animal’s body (a sitting child, for example) places less strain than does a less compact force further away (a standing child) due to balance control. It’s basic physics. The pressure on the spine when standing is therefore much greater than when sitting. Repeatedly standing on a dog places undue strain on the vertebrae that can result in nerve, disc, or spinal cord damage.
Mariola Thank you! For this clear explanation,. I talk to my regular veterinary doctor about this incident and she feels that standing on a dog is wrong and will cause a dog to have permanent back problems,. I can believed that they are some many stupid people defending Palins actions,. It’s really disturbing how far will fanatics go with their idolization.
Not to mention, as the child is stepping onto the dog in this picture, he is bearing down directly onto the spine. That is NOT okay in any circumstance. The spine is incredibly sensitive to such direct pressure.
