Jerry Douthett had been putting off going to the doctor. Although his wife urged him to go see the doctor about his toe, Jerry just kept ignoring it, hoping it would go away.
Jerry also owns a dog named Kiko, an adorable terrier.
One night, after heavy drinking, Jerry fell asleep. When he awoke, he saw Kiko, his face covered in blood. He looked at his foot, noticing it was covered in blood. “The toe was gone,” said Douthett. “He ate it. I mean, he must have eaten it, because we couldn’t find it anywhere else in the house. I look down, there’s blood all over, and my toe is gone.”
Unable to put off going to the doctor this time, he went. The doctors removed what remained of his infected toe. While performing tests, they noticed his blood sugar was high. He was diagnosed with diabetes.
In some ways, this is unsurprising. Dogs have been trained to smell cancer and high glucose levels. Perhaps Kiko sensed something was wrong and decided to do something about it?
